An internship reflection on SEO work at Traffic Bees

I am Wong Jing Yang, a Business Digitalisation Track student who completed an internship at Traffic Bees from 6 July to 28 August 2026 under Shawn Lim. Most of my work centred on SEO, particularly backlink prospecting and finding suitable brand-mention opportunities. The placement gave me a practical setting for classroom knowledge and showed how real constraints shape digital marketing decisions.

The placement

Traffic Bees is a small digital marketing agency working with clients across several sectors. I worked there as an intern from 6 July to 28 August 2026 under the supervision of Shawn Lim.

The on-the-job training plan I started with described a broad digital marketing placement. The work I actually undertook was predominantly SEO-related, with backlink opportunity research and forum or brand-mention research as the recurring responsibilities. Alongside them I worked on PickleGO metadata, a multilingual sitemap review and a spreadsheet automation.

My learning came from two directions at once. Classroom material and the learning resources supplied for the placement, including the Ahrefs beginner guide to SEO (opens in a new tab) and the Google SEO Starter Guide (opens in a new tab), supplied the vocabulary and the principles. Live work then supplied the practical constraints, such as a publisher fee that exceeds what a small business will approve, or a category page whose products change.

The journey page explains how the work and the learning developed. Impact brings together what I contributed, the feedback I received and what I would improve next.

The recurring responsibilities

Two areas of research accounted for the majority of my recurring work.

Supporting work

Alongside the research, I worked on the following.

What the placement showed me about the industry

Working inside a small agency showed me how a marketing team combines different forms of SEO work to support a client's traffic and visibility. The agency has to keep deciding where limited hours produce the most useful result for a client with a constrained budget.

The placement also improved my workplace communication and my understanding of how work is managed within a small team. The impact page sets out what came of the placement.

Client information

Campaign data, prospect lists, customer names and commercial figures are not reproduced on this site. The pages describe the work and the reasoning behind it.

Tools used
Ahrefs for discovery and prospect research, Google Sheets for tracking and collation, Google Apps Script with Google Cloud configuration and Tampermonkey for the ActiveSG workflow.
Other exposure
I helped with two PickleGO livestreams under Shawn and contributed ideas during two content-brainstorming sessions.
