Closing reflection

What the internship produced

The clearest process contribution of the placement is the ActiveSG workflow, where a recurring update of approximately twenty minutes became approximately one minute. The rest of the output is research and preparation handed over for others to act on.

Contribution

What I contributed

The clearest measurable contribution is the PickleGO ActiveSG collation workflow. The manual recurring update took approximately twenty minutes. The completed workflow reduced my update process to approximately one minute. Those figures are practical estimates from my use of the process and not a formal time study. The build is described on the automation page.

As a piece of business digitalisation, a recurring manual collection process became a browser-assisted Google Sheets workflow while the decision about when to run an update stayed with the person using the sheet.

The other contributions are summarised more briefly, because their downstream results are unknown to me. Backlink prospecting produced researched opportunities with the reasoning attached. Forum research resulted in answers being posted on Quora. Metadata was prepared for PickleGO pages. The multilingual site review produced feedback for correction.

ActiveSG workflow
A manual refresh run from the Sheet, with browser-assisted extraction through Tampermonkey, validation in Apps Script before writing and restored sheet formatting.
Backlink research
Prospect records carrying the reasoning and any commercial constraint behind each entry.
Forum research
Assessed discussion opportunities, with answers resulting from the work posted on Quora.
PickleGO metadata
Titles and descriptions prepared to stay accurate as the products listed on those pages change.
Sitemap review
Feedback on a multilingual URL mapping for a hearing care website, recorded so that entries could be corrected.

Evaluation

Supervisor feedback

My company evaluation gave me 46 out of 50 overall. Domain knowledge, problem solving and analytical thinking, learning and response to feedback and use of digital tools and technology were each marked at 5 out of 5. Communication was marked at 4 out of 5. In his written comments Shawn said that I needed to communicate more clearly, while also stating that I completed the tasks assigned to me well and had been a good help.

The communication feedback gives me a specific development priority. Written research gave me time to organise my reasoning before handing it over. Speaking with the same clarity and confidence is something I still need to improve, and the two PickleGO livestreams were the point in the placement where that gap was most visible to me.

Growth

Personal growth and takeaways

The placement gave me a stronger practical understanding of Ahrefs and of applied SEO, because I used the tools on live research and had to interpret what they reported in the context of a specific campaign. The PickleGO metadata was the clearest on-page example, the multilingual mapping review sat in site architecture and migration, and the backlink and brand-mention research was off-page work. Working across them showed how the fundamentals stay constant while their application changes with the project.

I also developed a broader understanding of how a small marketing agency combines different methods to improve a client's traffic and visibility, and I learnt more about workplace communication and how work is coordinated in a small team. Keeping the recurring research moving alongside project work is where most of that came from, since it required deciding where deeper investigation was justified. The company evaluation supports that side of my development, particularly the mark for responding to feedback.

Industry

What I saw of the agency and the industry

Working in a small marketing agency showed me how a marketing agency combines different methods to improve a client's traffic and visibility, and how it has to keep deciding where limited hours are best spent for a client with a constrained budget.

How the work supported client visibility

Select an area to see how it relates to the agency's wider objective. This describes where the work sat and it does not report any measured change in rankings or traffic.

Supporting client visibility

Search presence

Work on how client pages are described and reached. The PickleGO metadata covered titles and descriptions for subpages whose product ranges change, and the review of a hearing care website checked its multilingual URL mapping against the live site before the migration.

It also showed me how much the application varies between projects. The sites I worked on all need search visibility, and the way that visibility is pursued differs with the audience and the site. This is developed in applying SEO across project work.

Development

What I would develop next

The first direction is personal. Shawn's evaluation points at clearer professional communication, so my priority is becoming more confident and more precise when explaining work, particularly when technical reasoning has to be conveyed quickly rather than written up.

The second is about the process itself. Several SEO outputs were handed over before their longer-term effects could be observed. Where it is practical, future work of this kind should track which researched opportunities progressed and how implemented recommendations performed. That would give the research a source of evidence to be evaluated and improved against.

Boundaries

What I cannot claim

My work was research, preparation and the workflow build. Decisions and results that follow from that work sit with other people and appear later, so I have not reported rankings, traffic or placements secured.

The boundary of my contribution

What I can describe is the state of the work at handover. The workflow was built and produced the timings described, the mapping observations were recorded, the prospect records carried their reasoning and the Quora answers were posted. What happened afterwards is outside what I can verify.

Conclusion

Conclusion

The internship gave me a much more practical understanding of how SEO and digital marketing operate inside a small agency. Classroom knowledge gave me a foundation, while live work showed how commercial constraints and implementation details affect the final decision. I leave the placement with stronger practical SEO knowledge and a clearer understanding of how digital tools can improve repetitive work. Shawn's feedback also gives me a specific communication skill to continue developing.

I am grateful to Shawn and the Traffic Bees team for the opportunity to work on these projects and learn from the experience.
